So, what is the ‘Cloud’?

The cloud is essentially the term given to the computing model of moving servers, applications and data to the internet, typically from an on-premise scenario, so the likes of applications, emails and data can be easily accessed anywhere, anytime.

Moving to the cloud not only provides productivity gains but also has the potential to reduce overall information technology costs from a business.

An example of what moving to the cloud looks like for a small business:

Jim runs an engineering business with five employees and has a server on-premise which hosts his email and file storage. Jim can access his email and files from within the premise, but when he’s out on the road, he relies on other employees in the office to access this data, which is inefficient.

Moving his email to Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft OneDrive, both part of the Microsoft Office365 suite, Jim and his employees can now access his email and files securely where ever they are as long as he is connected to the internet, including his smartphone.

Jim simply pays a fee per user, per month rather than outlaying significant server hardware and licencing costs. Over a 5 year period, Jim has the potential to save around $15,000 just by moving his current on-premise set-up to the cloud.
